Radars are detection systems that use radio waves to determine the velocity, range, and angle of the objects. They are used to detect ships, aircrafts, missiles, and motor vehicles among others. Radars consist of a transmitter that produces electromagnetic waves in the microwaves or radio domain, a receiving and transmitting antenna and a processer and receiver in order to determine the property of the objects.

Ground surveillance radars are man portable and are capable of providing long detection ranges transmitting low peak power. These radars have high reliability, can be exposed to harsh field environment conditions, works in adverse weather conditions, and can work in an intensified profile of mission either in day or night. Ground surveillance radars can be deployed as a portable unit and can also be mounted on a vehicle. Ground surveillance radars specifically monitor activities surrounding areas which include airports, military bases, seaports, borders, refineries and other important industries. These radars are characterized by their ability to detect ground level movements such as possible targets crawling or walking towards a facility. These radars have ranges from a few meters to approximately 10 kilometers.
