This latest report by business intelligence provider Visiongain assesses that Shore Power Market spending will reach $3.2 bn in 2029.

Market Introduction

Shore power also known as cold ironing is the method of supplying electrical power to a ship at berth from the shore, enabling the auxiliary motors to be switched off. By plugging these motors in and shutting them off, shore power nearly eliminates diesel emissions and other air pollutants that would otherwise result from the onboard auxiliary motors of the vessel.

Ports are main centers for the motion of products and passengers from U.S. ships and are essential to the competitiveness, employment and financial prosperity of America’s businesses. Goods and passengers traveling through ports are expected to expand as are ship sizes owing to the opening in 2016 of the fresh Panama Canal locks and other variables. Some kinds of vessels may involve important energy while at berth, such as cruise, container, and refrigeration. This energy is produced typically by auxiliary diesel engines.

Shore power or “cold-ironing” allows vessels at dock or in dry dock to use shore-side electricity (usually from a local power grid through a port substation) to power electronic systems including fuel devices; loading and unloading; and to discontinue the use of their auxiliary motors. This electricity source switch eliminates air emissions connected with the use of auxiliary motors and moves the air emission burden to local grid power generation equipment. The assumption is that electric generation facilities have more diversified energy sources including green power sources such as solar, hydro-, biomass and wind power, and have better emission controls for NOx. It is therefore critical that you have your timescales correct and your forecasting plans ready. This report will ensure that you do. Visiongain’s report will ensure that you keep informed and ahead of your competitors. Gain that competitive advantage.

Market Overview and Trends

Shore power can reduce ship pollutant emissions at the dock considerably. Under the correct conditions when a ship is attached to shore power, total pollutant emissions can be decreased by up to 98% when using electricity from the national electricity grid (depending on the energy mix).

For a specific ship, when attached to shore power, the potential emission reduction advantages can be estimated at berth. Factors such as the quantity of moment actually linked, the rate of power consumption, energy expenses and complete berth time are defined in the evaluation and relate to the general shore power efficiency. Because these variables need to be assessed for each scenario, total emission reductions may vary. The assessment suggests that shore power may be most effective when applied at terminals and ports with a high percentage of frequently returning vessels, typically cruise ships and container ships

Market Dynamics:

Factors Influencing the Market Growth:

Shore power can significantly decrease emissions of air pollutants associated with harmful impacts on human health, environmental harm, and climate change. Despite these advantages, there are a number of obstacles to the use of shore power. It may be cheaper to run auxiliary motors instead of connecting to shore power, depending on the comparative expenses of marine bunker fuels to shore-side electricity. Furthermore, fleets must have the required infrastructure on the vessel side to connect to shore power systems, requiring significant investment. These obstacles can be overcome by further studies into how shore power or sophisticated emission reduction techniques can be implemented or encouraged.

Factors Restraining the Market Growth:

Barriers to the installation of shore power include expenses of infrastructure and electricity. Shore power needs infrastructure on the land, improvements to the electrical grid and changes to the ship. The comparative expense of using shore power instead of the fuel sources of a vessel is more appealing when the price of fuel is higher than the price of electricity.

European ferries are often bigger than their US counterparts and operate on longer paths. As such, charging times tend to be longer and higher demands on auxiliary engines. In the Netherlands, Stena Line, which runs a ferry terminal at Hoek van Holland, Rotterdam, has built two shore power berths and ordered four ferries (2 RORO, 2 ROPAX) to run on the shore in 2012. At their Swartz Bay Ferry Terminal, Seaspan Ferries Corporation has introduced a shore power scheme that offers daily commercial truck and trailer service between the mainland and Vancouver Island.
