The Steam Coal Market Report 2020-2030: Forecasts by Calorific Value (>5,500 kcal/kg, 5,500 kcal/kg - 6,100 kcal/kg, <6,100 kcal/kg), By Volatility (High Volatile, Medium Volatile, Low Volatile), by Region (North America, Europe, Asia Pacific, Central & South America, Middle East & Africa) and analysis of leading companies operating in this industry.

Steam coal is a thermal coal used mainly to produce electricity and heat. It is used in power plants as a fine powder and shot into boilers to drive steam turbines as it burns at high temperatures rapidly. Steam coal is also used in cement production during the calcination process. It has a high level of humidity, low ash content and less than 1% sulfur content.

Coal plays a vital role in generating electricity worldwide. Coal power plants produce some 35 percent of global electricity. Steam coal has a high surface area which consumes up to 400,000 volts of electricity at high temperatures easily. Rising demand for large amounts of energy for building & construction industry cement production is boosting demand for steam coal around the globe.

Such forces serve as the driving force of the global market for steam energy. In the near future, the introduction of new technologies and environmental concerns about the use of non-renewable sources are projected to hamper the market for steam coal in the energy sector.

During the forecast period, a rise in demand for renewable energy sources for power generation in different countries such as the U.S. and Germany is also expected to limit the steam coal industry. Nevertheless, emerging developments such as carbon storage / sequestration and coal liquefaction & gasification are expected to provide attractive opportunities for players operating on the demand for steam coal.

Indonesia, Indonesia, and Russia & CIS are some of the world's leading exporters of steam coal. Asia Pacific accounts for about 70 percent of the international steam coal market in terms of electricity generation. Due to the increase in demand for steam coal for thermal and hydropower production, the market in China and India in Asia Pacific is likely to expand at a substantial rate during the forecast period. In terms of steam coal consumption, India is projected to become a main market. This can be due largely to increased government initiatives to provide the rural population with 100 percent energy by 2020.
