Visiongain’s new report the U.S. Trona Market Report 2020-2030: Forecasts by End Use (Power, Glass, Steel, Cement, Oil & Gas, Waste Management, Others), By Application (Soda Ash, Animal Feed, Air Pollution Control) and analysis of leading companies operating in this industry. In 2019, the size of the U.S. trona market is expected to value at more than USD 2 billion and a CAGR of more than 1.7 percent is expected from 2020 to 2030. The trona demand from animal feed, air pollution control and the soda ash industry is projected to drive the market. Trona is used mainly to produce soda ash, to heat and convert to sodium bicarbonate at a very high temperature. Soda ash is used for detergents, fabrics and glass as a raw material. So the rise of soda ash demand is a key driver of the growth of the market.
The market is reinforced by large bedded and interbedded trona deposits located in Wyoming's Green River Basin. Most of the region's trona is mined using conventional continuous methods as well as room and pillar mining. The mining companies are focused on improving the solutions of the mining technique to increase the recovery of the product.
Strict government regulations on air pollution reduction and increasing adoption of Dry Sorbent Injection (DSI) systems in fossil-fuel power plants are projected to boost product demand in the desulphurization market for flue gas. As their waste disposal is less complex and requires less water, dry scrubbers have comparatively lower annual and capital costs than wet systems. The production of synthetic or unnatural soda leaves several by-products, such as residual chloride, calcium carbonate and other components of calcium.
The supply situation is likely to remain tight worldwide at the moment, and U.S. producers are focused on exploiting export opportunities at attractive prices. In the U.S., the top three trona producers were seeking price increases of USD 6 per ton separately. Severance tax on minerals in Wyoming State is likely to further contribute to the growth of the industry and the economic development of the United States. However, increased export competition from China and increased production capacity in Turkey are projected to remain a major challenge for existing suppliers.
Glass production has emerged as the largest end-use industry. In the U.S., the production of glass uses more than half of the soda ash produced from trona. It is estimated that the market will be driven by increased demand for glass from major industries such as construction and automotive. Also likely to contribute to the robust growth of the glass container manufacturing industry in the U.S. trona market. Depending on the wide use of soda ash as a dephosphorizer, dentrider, desulfurizer and flux, product demand in the steel industry is likely to increase.

The production of domestic phosphate rock in 2019 was reduced by the temporary closure of one mine in Florida and the reduction of phosphate rock inventories by companies. Because of lower output of phosphoric acid and fertiliser, domestic consumption was 4 % lower.
