This report presents a wireless monitoring system based on mobile devices which can provide online information in real time regarding a patient’s physiological conditions. In the last decade, scientists have received considerable interest from health monitoring programs. The overall objective was to establish a robust patient monitoring system so that clinicians would track their clients, either in clinic or in regular day-to-day practice. Furthermore, the system can send alarming messages by text messages or email reports on the critical health data of the patient. The system consists mainly of sensors, data acquisition units, microcontrollers, and software (LabVIEW, for example). Our machine tracks, records and stores patient temperature, pulse speed, muscles, blood pressure, amount of blood glucose and ECG information. The proposed system was tested in the field to ensure reliability and accuracy.
In recent years, mobile telephone technology has progressed. Including traditional speech information transmission, most groundbreaking technologies for cell phones have been implemented. In the recent past, a number of applications including business transactions have been identified for short message service (SMS) originally developed for the sending of service provider’s status data. A prototype of a wireless health monitoring system is developed in this project that can send SMS related to the patient’s health situation. The project can be divided into three phases of acquisition, processing of data and communication. A data acquisition phase is made up of the temperature and pulse rate monitoring sensors. The sensor outputs are digitally converted and read by a Basic Stamp microcontroller which is processed and sent to Visual BasicTM data processing software through the serial port.
In Visual Basic various GUI modes are developed to support data processing, for example, patient information. Important values can be applied to measured data, which exceeds the values set by the Visual Basic for sendering SMS to predefined mobile numbers in the contact system. When faults or thresholds are detected, the surveillance system transmits information automatically to the physician’s mobile telephone via a GSM / SMS gateway via an SMS message Different design options have been considered and the best is selected for each stage of the project. As a prototype, the project succeeded in sending patient information SMS to the physicians. Given that only a prototype was intended for this project, accuracy of sensors and other data acquisition features were affected by selecting the available sensor or simulating it instead of using biomedical sensors due to cost and availability factors.
For an effective PMS it is of prime importance that a patient has to register and notify the vital signs in real-time. Modern PMS systems should acquire, record, display and transmit the physiological data from the patient body to a remote location at all times by encapsulating the advantages of modern bioinstrumentation, computers and telecoms technologies. PMS must also be combined with an alarm system for more reliable, prompt and emergency medical care. The PMS should not only monitor and analyze the critical patient information, it should send an alarming signal when the monitored data goes away. to alert both the patient and providers of health services outside their normal ranges. The PMS must therefore be associated with an active database system. The majority of PMSs proposed are centralized in such a way that all patient data is stored on one single server. The database can be linked via TCP / IP protocol to an open communication network with the appropriate firmware and code. A patient can therefore be monitored remotely. In this respect, existing and broad mobile telephone networks can help.
