Coal tar is a thick dark liquid which is a by-product of the production of coke and coal gas from coal. It has both medical and industrial uses. Due to their usage in the manufacture of electrodes used in primary aluminum manufacturing, demand for coal tar pitch is growing considerably. The growing demand for aluminum from different industries would therefore propel the coal tar pitch market, which is a distilled type of coal tar.

Furthermore, stringent regulations on vehicle emissions have paved way for light-weight automobile components which is further expected to drive the demand for coal tar. While the emission of harmful greenhouse gases during the production of coal tar pitch is emerging as a concern, occupational exposure to coal tar or coal-tar pitch increases the risk of skin cancer thereby hindering market growth.

Supply gap due to production halt brought about by COVID-19 pandemic is expected restrict sales growth. However, the rising demand for coal tar products from the healthcare sector is expected to stabilize market growth during the forecast period.
