“Pharmaceutical Glass Packaging Market Over USD 20.1 billion in 2020”, says Visiongain report

Visiongain’s new report the Pharmaceutical Glass Packaging Market Report 2020-2030: Forecasts by Product (Vials, Bottles, Cartridges & Syringes, Ampoules) plus analysis of leading companies indicates that the global Pharmaceutical Glass Packaging market will grow at a CAGR over 6% by 2030.

It is anticipated that high demand from the pharmaceutical industry and widespread use of generic injectable drugs would drive growth. Glass prohibits the entry into the primary tank of atmospheric gases such as oxygen and carbon dioxide, thereby eliminating pharmaceutical pollution. It also avoids potential degradation of the drug, such as oxidation and hydrolysis. Therefore, glass packaging improves the durability of the drug by preventing volatile ingredient escape. All of these factors are expected to increase the demand for the product in the near future. The new and improved products are made using glass chemistry and ion-exchange processes which resulted in the reduction of the surface friction coefficient and the inherent production of strong and damage-resistant glass. During the forecast period, this trend is expected to drive demand for pharmaceutical glass packaging products. Due to the high inertia of these products for most chemicals, the demand for glass vials is expected to remain high over the forecast period. In fact, the vials prohibit entry into the tank of atmospheric gases such as oxygen and carbon dioxide.

The vials, including oxidation and hydrolysis, also stop possible degradation. The vials stop the substance from escape into the environment through unstable ingredients and thus keep the drug / product safe. By addition, both glass and plastic are recyclable. The latter has its own set of drawbacks, though, as it can only be recycled back into glass. As a result, plastic loses its quality, as various items such as plastic lumber, carpet filling, and foam packaging among others can be reused, thereby restricting the growth of the industry.

Due to the large number of regional and global players, the market for pharmaceutical glass packaging is highly fragmented. The top ten players from the industry combined, however, accounted for most of the revenue in 2018. Because of the presence of a well-established pharmaceutical industry in these countries, a large number of manufacturers are mainly concentrated in developed regions, such as North America and Europe.

Growing importance of biotech drugs and cost-sensitivity in the healthcare sector has resulted in the establishment of stringent drug delivery products regulations. Most manufacturers of glass pharmaceutical packaging invest in products that aim to increase the drug's shelf-life, which is expected to increase demand in the coming years. Over the past couple of years, the global market for generic drugs has seen an increase due to the increase in pharmaceutical patent expiration, the aging population, and the increase in the prevalence of chronic diseases. Because of its superior barrier properties and regulatory ease, generics growth is expected to fuel demand for glass packaging.

The U.S. market is expected to remain a key area for various pharmaceutical glass packaging business activities. This is due to the significant rise in the country's amount of generics that is expected to undergo a rapid change in market dynamics mainly due to increased competitive intensity and consolidation of customers. Both combined instances put pressure on demand that is supposed to restrict branded product sales through patent expiries and low-cost generics.
