Tire Derived Fuel (TDF) facilities are considered to be plants that use scrap or misshapen tires which can then be either shredded or chipped to between 1 and 4 inches. The scrap tires can be collected from multiple sources, such as; manufacturers, retail partners, local councils and then can be moved on to be processed at various plants. After these tires have been shredded or chipped, the processed tires can be mixed with other fuels such as; coal, wood and chemical waste. These mixtures are then burned in concrete kilns, paper mills or can even be used in power plants. Due to a growing world population, this results in increased vehicle manufacture and usage, resulting in increased levels of waste tires and with climate change and energy policies coming to the forefront of politics, a use needs to be found for this waste while reducing emissions.
The Visiongain report analyst commented "The interest in tire derived fuel (TDF) is growing as an option for the sustainable management of waste tires. Population and waste growth will be the major drivers for the development of tire derived fuels and will primarily be seen in North America and Asia-Pacific. During the last decade or so, increased waste and outlook on environmental policy developed the need for a use for these waste tires as a source of fuel."
