In the periodic table of the elements, sulfur and chlorine are neighbors and have very similar conditions of excitation. As a result, low concentration chlorine peaks tend to disappear among the much higher peaks of sulfur. This makes it a challenging task for any XRF to determine trace levels (mg / kg) of chlorine in the presence of high sulfur levels (mass percent).
