‘Global market for airborne ISR systems will reach around $18.9bn. in 2010’ says visiongain report

London, UK 25 August 2010: Visiongain’s new report The Airborne ISR Market 2010-2020 provides an analysis of the global market for airborne intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) systems. Visiongain calculates that in 2010 the global market for airborne ISR systems will reach around $18.9bn. This is due to the high priority placed on spending on airborne ISR by armed forces worldwide. Led by the US, which has the largest share of spending on airborne ISR, many of the world’s armed services are acquiring or developing a wide range of airborne ISR systems for use in current conflicts as well as in future scenarios. Despite the challenges posed by reduced or frozen defence budgets, many airborne ISR programmes are expected to generally have funding support over the next decade.

In recent years, airborne ISR has become much more expansive as the sector now counts a vast range of systems – from hand-launched to jet-powered UAVs, twin-turboprop to large airliner-based systems, and even aerostats and airships.

Manned systems in airborne ISR continue to account for the bulk of airborne ISR spending but unmanned systems are growing strongly.

There will be steady demand across the different roles of airborne ISR, namely:
• Airborne Early Warning (AEW)
• Airborne Ground Surveillance (AGS)
• Signals Intelligence (SIGINT)
• Maritime Patrol (MP)

The airborne ISR market is being driven by major acquisition programmes. Many of these are initiated by the US military but there are similar programmes in other countries, notably in parts of Europe and in the Asia-Pacific region.

The Airborne ISR Market 2010-2020 report reveals that there are a number of countries that are in the midst of, or planning to embark upon, significant airborne ISR programmes. This trend is expected to continue into the future, providing robust demand for airborne ISR systems, both manned and manned. This points to opportunities in airborne ISR over the next decade for companies that are currently involved this sector, or plan to become part of it.
