London, UK; 25 April 2010: Sales of ophthalmic drugs will continue to rise due to an increasing prevalence of eye disorders among aging populations worldwide, according to visiongain's new report, "World Ophthalmic Pharmaceutical Market 2010-2025". In particular, retinal disorders, glaucoma, and dry eye disorder as well as ocular allergies, infections, and inflammation will have the greatest impact upon the elderly from 2010 onwards.
Both currently untreatable and poorly-treated eye diseases will also have a high potential for technological and commercial advances. Expected future benefits include restoration of vision and the cessation of vision loss, with superior potential gains for developers. From 2010 to 2025, success in the market will be characterised by novel products with superior efficacy, safety and tolerability. In fact, drugs for the treatment of retinal disorder and glaucoma will drive the ophthalmic pharmaceutical industry for the next 15 years.
"The primary driver for this prediction is increasing life expectancy and the increasing number of older people in most countries," says Mr Syed Ahmed, pharmaceutical market analyst at visiongain. "Age is one of the most important risk factors for a number of ophthalmic disorders, including glaucoma, AMD and dry eye syndrome." Additional risk factors include being afflicted with diabetes, having a close relative with certain eye disorders, being a part of certain ethnic groupings, using tobacco, or eating an unbalanced diet.
However, the ophthalmic pharmaceutical market will face grave competition from generic drug companies. After 2010, the patent for many leading brands will expire, resulting in increasing generic competition and lower growth for the sector. The market will also suffer from poor patient compliance due to concerns about side effects and the efficacy of certain drugs. A low rate of diagnosis for some eye disorders will also affect the industry, as ophthalmic disorders are being continually under-diagnosed and under-treated worldwide. Nevertheless, total revenues in the ophthalmic pharmaceutical industry are expected to increase significantly from 2010 to 2025.
