Background Info

India is the fastest growing cellular market in the world. With ever rising cellular subscribers, voice is increasingly becoming a commodity. Over 260 million people in India now own mobile phones & this is expected to reach 500 million by 2010. Propelled by the need to bring in service differentiation, operators are bringing new value added services in order to satisfy the growing demand of Indian consumers. Value Added Services is increasingly a growth area which helps the operator to maximise revenue and grow their ARPU. Presently Mobile VAS accounts for 10% of the operator’s revenue, which is expected to reach 18% by 2010. VAS can greatly be improved with forthcoming 3G launch. The revenue from mobile value added services has already touched 4600 crore. As a mobile base, India is recognised as the second biggest mobile growth market after China with over 278 million subscribers, a subscription base that is set to exceed 737 million connections by 2012. Cellular subscriptions in South Asia (Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka) exceeded 320 million in December 2007. This represented 24% of Asia Pacific’s total cellular subscriptions. This figure is forecasted to increase by 36% to 775 million by the end of 2012.  India will have some 730 million mobile phone customers by 2012 and every fifth among this user base will be using a 3G connection.
